MISSION DEBRIEFING

PIGS MIGHT FLY was the first picture book I illustrated with author Jonathan Emmett. His re-telling of the classic Three Little Pigs story immediately fired up my imagination and the opportunity to design some pretty mad-looking aeroplanes was immediately appealing to me. Jonathan explains how this story came about on his website and you can read that here.

I was working with Puffin on another project at the time when they asked me if I’d also like to illustrate Jonathan’s story. Jonathan and the editor at Puffin had both seen an illustration of a mechanical bird I had on my website which I think convinced them that I would be a good choice of illustrator for the aeroplanes in the book.

Aeroplanes on the drawing board. One of the fun parts of this commission was to come up with some aeroplane designs. As a young boy, I had spent a considerable amount of time (and pocket money) on building and painting model aircraft. For several years my bedroom ceiling was festooned with my efforts, dangling from cotton threads. I can remember lying on my bed gazing up at these marvellous contraptions of all shapes and sizes. I think a lot of the interests I had in aircraft and model making as a boy fed into my illustrations for the book.

OUR TROPHY!

It was very gratifying to win our very own trophy for Pigs Might Fly at the Red House Children’s Book Awards. We didn’t get any pies though!

Did you know? Wilbur’s aeroplane design was inspired by the Gee Bee Racer and the Gloucester Whittle Jet shown below.
