DIORAMA POP-UPS

Nick Denchfield and I have collaborated on several pop-up projects published by Macmillan Children’s Books. These include, a Medieval Castle with a ‘whodunnit’ mystery to solve, a Victorian Mansion populated by a bunch of mad inventors and their inventions. More complex ‘carousel’ pop-ups have included a hugely popular Pirate Ship, a rambling, ruined haunted Spooky Castle and an out of this world Space Station which was featured on The Antiques Roadshow as a recommendation for future investments!

Our favourite quote from an Amazon review is…

Nick can do amazing things with paper and cardboard! His ideas normally start out as a blank white dummy which I use to make concept sketches and then we work up ideas and details as to what should feature on each pop-up. The designs can get very elaborate but are great fun to work on and illustrate. The challenge is to make everything work in three dimensions and to try and imagine yourself stepping into one of these miniature worlds.

SPACE STATION

Published by Macmillan Children’s Books

When the space station is attacked by evil Swampmunchers, it’s up to Space Cadet Nick Nova and his hero Captain Jake Janus to save the day . . . but is Jake all he seems? Young space adventurers will love to join Nick and stage their own alien encounters as they speed through the cosmos in this amazing pop-up adventure. With an exciting story, press-out play pieces and four pop-up spaceships, this book turns into an incredible space station that's truly out of this world!

SPOOKY CASTLE

Welcome to Spooky Castle! Who would you like to be your guide? The Grim Reaper? The Headless Knight? Or maybe a friendly poltergeist . . . Start in the catacombs, and beware of ghastly ghouls at every turn!

When you've finished exploring this astonishing pop-up castle, press-out the figures and play the game to find out if YOU could be the ruler of Spooky Castle.

INVENTION MANSION

Published by Macmillan Children’s Books

This ready assembled (no cutting, no gluing) model opens out, in the same way as a traditional doll's house, to reveal 16 rooms to explore - all packed full of Victorian inventions. The accompanying book with over 50 press-out pieces provides a simple introduction to the technology behind many of the great inventions of the 19th century, with the emphasis very much on the bizarre.

MEDIEVAL CASTLE

Published by Macmillan Children’s Books

A 3-D pop-out model of Baron Swarthy's Castle accompanies a fact-filled book that tells of a murder and invites readers to look for clues to discover the villain's whereabouts before the king arrives.
